Dealing with abuse when running

Dealing with abuse when running is probably one the things new runners fear the most when starting running. By abuse, we mean shouts and calls from bystanders and members of the public who can’t resist calling out when you run past.

Our experience has shown that these jokers fall into the following categories.

1. Groups of young men.
Depends on the “non verbal signals” probably best off ignoring. Especially if they are stood menacingly. Cracking wise back will definately throw down the gauntlet to them ..
Be extra careful if they have dog(s) on a lead or running lose.

2. Groups of young women.
Probably safe to reply with something like “thanks coach” or some other non threatening reply

3.Groups of mixed adults.
Trust your instincts and treat as 1 or 2 above.

4. People shouting/throwing things from passing cars.
Definately ignore. Someone once threw a beer can from a car at some traffic lights at us and we foolishly replied “next time throw a full one”. Briefly, we saw the reverse lights come on but then they thought better of it.

But the real question is, why do these people do this?
Why does the”average” man in the street feel compelled to shout “helpful” advice

Maybe, you have smart kit, sunglasses, T shirt with adverts on

Maybe you look pretty cool when you are passing and maybe, just maybe, the bystanders are a little bit jealous… because they aren’t…

Running on the road or the pavement?
