3 peaks of Yorkshire – How hard can it be?
One of the most unexplainable things about being an athlete is the buzz of the unexpected. It is something that you can’t explain to someone who isn’t an athlete.
Turning up at a race you haven’t done before, going round a course for the first time in training.
The 3 peaks of Yorkshire has got me a bit like that.
Yes, I have been up Pen-Y-Ghent before but that was 10 years ago and the last leg of the Yorkshire Dales Triathlon and I wasn’t in full control at the time.
So to be honest… I can’t really remember…
However, my web research has led me to the following
1. Pen-Y-Ghent is first and starting from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, a decent walker will reach the top in around an hour and a half.
2. Whernside is the one which will knock the stuffing out of you. From PYG, it is a long slog cross country and onto the hill itself which has some VERY steep sections at the top. I understand this is why it’s called the “roof of Yorkshire”
3. I have no chance of coming anywhere near to the time of runners in the 3 peaks fell race (over a very slightly different course) because the winners time is consistently under 3 hours..
So – tell me – How hard can it be?
