Looking after your running shoes

If you have followed our series on how to start running and choosing your running shoes, you are most likely the proud owner of a new pair of trainers. But what do you do to look after them and care for them (and your feet)?

We suggest wearing the shoes around the house as carpet slippers for a few days or even a week. Short periods at first. This is to bed them in, get your feet used to them and vice versa.

When you do venture out, chose a short run for the first few times and don’t be afraid of turning for home if you feel any “hotspots” or blisters.

Only wear your running shoes for running in and while this may sound obvious, you can afford to spend more money if you make your shoes last longer.

Buy a cheap pair of flip-flops or sandals for socialising at races.

If you can afford 2 pairs, rotate them to even wear. But beware,  even the same make and model of shoe can fit differently.

If they get wet, allow them to dry naturally. Stuffing with old newspaper can speed up the drying process.

Break new shoes in gradually and definately no races for at least 6 weeks or 3 months. Before your race, you should be confident that they are NOT going to blister.

Remember the corny saying “Look after your shoes and they will look after you”
