Best running book??

Quite a lot of people ask us, “whats the best book to buy to learn to start running?”

What they really mean is “which book can I buy to get the benefits of running, lose weight etc, but not actually have to do any running?”

We are big believers in “specificity” which simply means, that to get good at something, you must practice that activity and only that activity so you get good at it.

Note – practice doesn’t make perfect, practicing the right things makes perfect…

Example – You don’t learn to swim by watching other people – you learn to swim by …swimming

Anyway, so the short answer is – “save you money or put it towards a pair of quality trainers”

But one book, for us, is the must have, definitive, bookshelf book

“The lore of running” by Tim Noakes is quite a meaty tome. At almost 1000 pages, it would do you quite an injury if you dropped it on your foot.

It covers many aspects of running, training, developing programs etc There is also fascinating sections on training patterns of elite runners past and present including probably the first ever running celebrity, American Indian “Deerfoot”

All in all – an addition to any bookshelf – though probably not for the beginner though..

Heel striking or forefoot striking?
