A running fitness test
September 15, 2008 · 5 Comments
One way to keep motivation in your running is to see yourself improve. For beginner runners (and everyone else too for that matter) a fitness test is a daunting prospect. Running till the point of exhaustion is no fun and can be dangerous. Here is a low stress fitness test which will give you a level of fitness indicator. You will need; a stopwatch and a heart rate monitor (preferably one which sounds an audible alarm if you go over a certain limit but that’s not essential). Pick a course that will take around 30 minutes to run around at a slow pace. The course should be as flat as possible... [Read the full story]

Is running bad for you?
April 14, 2009 · 2 Comments
An urban myth that needs putting down straight away is that running is bad for you. It’s a common misconception that running is bad for joints, feet, knees etc etc That’s because people who give this “advice” have tried running, ran as far as they could until exhaustion set in, using ill fitting shoes and kit and then tried to repeat it the next day and the next. The human body is not a machine and while it may be easy to go out and get the kit the pros use, it’s actually harder to repeat what you see them do on TV. So, bottom line, running is not bad for you, it’s... [Read the full story]

Nokia N82 sporttracker
December 5, 2008 · 2 Comments
OK, so the N82 has a nifty bit of software called the sporttracker. In a nutshell, you turn it on, put it into you pocket or whatever and set it going. It then “talks” to a satellite in the sky and you can track where you have been. Just noticed an option called “live sharing” – has anyone else spotted this ? Is it a new update, can people see where I am? The documentation seems a little thin… Read More →

Even pace pace chart
February 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment
The pace chart gives you some idea of what your time for one distance would convert to for other distances ASSUMING even pace. So if you can run a mile in 6 minutes, this chart assumes you can run 2 miles in 12. Not really that helpful from a pace point of view – even if you can run a mile in 6 minutes and 2 in 12, you may be less likely to run 20 miles in 120 minutes. What this chart will do is give you an idea of what it feels like to run that fast. Anyhow, hope it is of some use. In the summertime
June 30, 2009 · 3 Comments
Yes, not posted in a while but the warm weather in the UK got me (and 97,422 other people) out running in the last few days. And what fun in my local country park.. Women pushing prams without looking where they are pushing them to. People riding mountain bikes that are hopelessly the wrong size for them and in hopelessly the wrong gear. Of course the wayward dogs bounding all over the place. The “lads” gathered round a clapped out Vauxhall Nova with music blasting out shouting “helpful” advice as I go past. Call me a bit of a miserable sod – but give me rain any... [Read the full story]

Which running shoes for kids?
March 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Which running shoes for kids is a topic which came up talking other coaches at junior athletics the other day. We were discussing running shoes and. (My views on running shoes have been blogged in the past.) Here were the three main types of footwear we saw children (aged 8-15) wearing. Spikes Split between good athletes (of all ages) – these kids know what they are doing and those kids who want to look like they know what they are doing. And those who don’t really have a clue (or more likely their parents don’t – spikes aren’t going to help you in circuit training… Fashion... [Read the full story]

If you have followed our series on how to start running and choosing your running shoes, you are most likely the proud owner of a new pair of trainers. But what do you do to look after them and care for them (and your feet)? We suggest wearing the shoes around the house as carpet slippers for a few days or even a week....
